Building a Share Portfolio in Australia
Investing directly in shares can be overwhelming to new investors, especially when market conditions turn hostile.
Dear How To Money Reader,
Recently Australians have taken a new-found interest in share investing. So much so, that our financial regulator, ASIC, is actually worried about it.
Investing directly in shares can be overwhelming to new investors, especially when market conditions turn hostile. Thankfully, experienced investor and author of Shareplicity, Danielle Ecuyer, has put together an excellent 12-point plan that can be used as a reminder of what’s important, as well as a good go-to checklist for all share investors.
The first step is to set your investment goals, something I imagine most people opening brokerage accounts over the last few months haven’t done yet. Establish how much money over time you have to invest; what you are aiming to achieve; will you trade or invest for real wealth creation? how much time and energy do you have to commit to direct investing? How much risk can you afford to take on?
I also had the pleasure of speaking to Danielle on the How To Money podcast, for a bumper episode on share investing in Australia! We covered a range of topics from skills new share investors should build and macroeconomic trends to red flags to avoid and how to identify quality companies. I also recorded an extra episode with Danielle answering listener questions I’ve received recently regarding shares, so plenty to catch up on. These episodes are available on Apple Podcasts, Spotify and Castbox.

I hope your month is going well so far and if you’ve got spare time, consider starting to get your affairs in order for tax time (it always seems to come around way too quickly)! As always, you can catch me at howtomoneyaus@gmail.com.
